Caption: Acne vulgaris. View of severe acne vulgaris on the shoulder of an adolescent male. The hair follicles and sebaceous glands are inflamed, appearing as pustules (teenage "spots"). The spots are at various stages of scabbing and scar formation. Acne vulgaris begins during puberty, affecting areas of the skin that have a high concentration of sebaceous glands. Regular washing of the skin prevents the spread of infection, but there is no instant cure. Treatments include benzoyl peroxide, retinoic acid, antibiotic lotions and sulphurous creams. Ultraviolet light is often a beneficial treatment for acne. .
