Caption: Acne vulgaris. Illustration of a section through the human skin, showing a blackhead pustule in the condition of acne. At upper centre is a keratin plug (black), and beneath it is sebum (yellow) trapped beneath the plug forming a raised pustule. A hair follicle is seen (lower left) & an actively secreting sebaceous gland (lower right). Acne is a general name given to a skin disorder in which the sebaceous glands become inflamed & obstructed. The most common form, Acne vulgaris, occurs in adolescence and is due to overactivity of the sebaceous glands. Pustules occur on the face, chest and back. More severe, chronic acne results in infected cysts and scarring of the skin.
