Caption: Alopecia. Thinning of a man's hair over his crown and immediately behind the fringe hairline (centre). Male pattern baldness, also known as hereditary alopecia, is the commonest form of hair loss. Normal hair is replaced by fine, downy hair and the affected area gradually widens as the line of normal hair recedes. The pattern of hair loss is inherited; it usually affects men although young women and post menopausal women are occasionally affected. There is no effective treatment for the condition, although wigs and transplants may be used to disguise it.
