Acneiform cyst. View of a large, brown acneiform cyst at the side of the nose of a teenage boy. This type of cyst is associated with acne, a skin disorder in which the sebaceous glands become inflamed. The commonest variety, acne vulgaris generally starts in adolescence and is caused by overactivity of the sebaceous glands. The sebum produced by the glands cannot escape as the hair follicles are blocked by a keratin plug. A pustule forms with fluid leaking into the surrounding tissue. Acne vulgaris is found mainly on the face, back and chest. Treatment is with antibiotic drugs and ultraviolet light. This cyst was removed by surgical excision.
