Caption: Alzheimer's disease. Computed tomography (CT) scan of an axial section through the brain of a patient aged 66 suffering from Alzheimer's disease. The disease is also known as "senile dementia". At top is the front of the brain. Here, at the level of the temporal lobes, the cerebrum of the brain is seen (light blue); central dark areas are the ventricles. Alzheimer's disease has enlarged the ventricles due to death of brain cells. Destruction of nerve tissue is also seen on the outer edge of the brain, with deep abnormal folding and brain shrinkage. See photo P332/225 for a directly equivalent scan of a healthy brain.
