Caption: Myelodysplastic anaemia. View of the inner eyelid of a patient showing myelodysplastic anaemia. The eyelid appears very pale. Myelodysplastic anaemia is caused by a failure of the bone marrow to produce enough new blood cells, which leads to a lack of oxygen-carrying red blood cells. This causes headaches, lethargy, breathing difficulties and dizziness. Bone marrow is the spongy tissue inside bones which normally maintains a healthy level of blood cells in circulation. The condition may be treated by a bone marrow transplant, or by regular blood transfusions.
