Caption: Alzheimer's disease. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of an axial (horizontal) secti- on through a brain with Alzheimer's disease. In this condition there is widespread destruction of brain tissue leading to abnormally deep folding and shrinkage of the brain (red). Two of the brain's fluid-filled ventricles (blue, centre) have become enlarged. The disease leads to memory loss and disorientation, and is the most common cause of senile dementia. The cause of Alzheimer's disease is unknown and there is no cure. MRI scanning uses a magnetic field and a pulse of radio waves to produce "slice" images of the body.
