Caption: Alzheimer's disease. Light micrograph of a section through the brain of a patient suffering from Alzheimer's disease. The nerve cells (neurones, purple) in the brains of Alzheimer's sufferers degenerate and die, leading to a progressive deterioration in brain function. The loss of neurones from the brain tissue at right can be seen when it is compared with the darker tissue at left. This is a section through the outer layer (cortex) of the cerebrum, the largest and most developed part of the brain. Magnification unknown.
