Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Abscess on the scrotum of a 59 year old man. This occurred after brachitherapy surgery for the treatment of prostate cancer. An abscess is a pus- filled infection surrounded by damaged and inflamed tissue. An abscess can form anywhere in the body. Those under the skin are usually red, painful and very tender. Treatment includes surgical drainage of the pus, and antibiotic drugs to clear up the infection and prevent recurrence. Brachitherapy is the insertion of radioactive material close to cancerous cells. The radiation kills the cells, helping to cure the cancer.
