Caption: Abnormal appendix. Coloured X-ray of part of the large intestine of a 75-year-old male patient showing an abnormal appendix (blue, lower right). He has been given a barium meal to make the colon (white) and appendix appear opaque to X-rays. The appendix is elongated, which may indicate appendicitis. Appendicitis causes abdominal pain, fever and loss of appetite. It is usually treated by the surgical removal of the appendix.
