Amyloid is a general term for normally occuring protein fragments. In a healthy brain the fragments are broken down, but in an Alzheimer's brain the fragments accumulate into hard, insoluble plaques. Neurofibrillary tangles (insoluble twisted fibres) are also present in an Alzheimer's brain (black lines). They consist of a protein involved with microtubules, which transport nutrients from one part of a nerve cell to another. In Alzheimer's, the protein is abnormal and the microtubules collapse.
