Caption: Pulmonary aspergillosis. Coloured frontal chest X- ray of the lungs of a patient with pulmonary aspergillosis (upper left). Aspergillosis is caused by the inhalation of spores from the Aspergillus sp. fungus, which is usually found in decaying vegetation. In healthy individuals the immune system destroys the spores before they can cause harm. However, it may cause an allergic reaction in those with asthma or a potentially fatal infection in those suffering from other pulmonary diseases or with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of the infection include fever, chest pain and blood in the urine. Aspergillosis may be treated with antifungal drugs.
