Caption: Asbestosis. Frontal chest X-ray of the lungs of a patient with asbestosis. Tissue scarring can be seen (white, centre left and right). Asbestosis is a lung disease caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibres. Usually, foreign particles in the lungs are engulfed by macrophages (scavenger cells). However, the shape of the asbestos fibres punctures the macrophages, releasing their contents into lung tissue. This causes scarring of the tissue (fibrosis). Over many years, the lungs stiffen, which results in breathing problems and cardiovascular failure. Asbestosis is linked to several types of lung cancer. There is no cure for asbestosis.
