Caption: Thyroid adenomas. Scintigram of two nodules (adenomas, red/yellow) growing on the left and right lobes of a thyroid gland. The thyroid is an endocrine gland found in the neck, responsible for the production of hormones controlling the body's metabolism. The quantities of hormones produced are regulated by thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). The nodules, which are benign growths, are not controlled by TSH. Instead, they produce excess quantities of hormones, causing hyperthyroidism. Thyroid nodules can be treated with radioactive iodine or surgical removal. Using the radioactive tracer iodine-123, a scintigram shows the activity of the thyroid gland.
