Caption: Pleural asbestosis. Frontal chest X-ray of the lungs of a patient with asbestosis affecting the membranes that line the chest cavity and lungs (the pleura). Asbestosis is a lung disease caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibres, which cause scarring of the lung tissue (white speckles). When the pleura is affected, the scarring takes the form of calcified deposits known as pleural plaques. These plaques cause pain and a shortness of breath. Over time they become more calcified, leading to breathing problems and cardiovascular failure. There is no cure for asbestosis.
