SPECT (single positron emission computed tomography) uses a radioactive isotope, in this case technetium-99m (Tc-99m) to show the activity of brain tissue, active tissue taking up more. Alzheimer's disease is a wasting disease of brain tissue, causing progressive dementia. Brain activity is colour-coded here, from red (most active) through yellow to green (least active). The most affected area is the yellow break in the red region at the front of the brain. The frontal lobes control memory and personality, which are both affected in Alzheimer's.
