Caption: Amyloidosis. Fluorescent light micrograph of a section through the duodenum (small intestine) of a patient with amyloidosis, the accumulation of amyloid protein deposits in body tissues. The deposits impair the function of the tissues they are in, in this case causing malabsorption of nutrients from partially digested food in the intestines. The deposits can be caused by several diseases, or by a primary disease of the immune system. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Magnification: x115 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
