Caption: Anaemia. Light micrograph of a blood smear from a patient with hypochromic anaemia. A white blood cell with a stained nucleus is at centre. This type of anaemia is characterised by a decreased concentration of haemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen, in the red blood cells. This causes them to appear pale. There are many causes of anaemia, but the most common is iron deficiency, as iron is essential for the formation of haemoglobin. Anaemia cause pallor, tiredness and weakness. Treatment is aimed at the underlying cause.
