Caption: Liver infection and abscess formation, gross specimen. The white patches are regions of diseased tissue caused by bacterial infection. The infection has spread via the hepatic portal system, which drains blood from the digestive system. The patches are pus-filled and some are circumscribed by smooth circular linings forming abscesses. The linings are the body's way of containing the infection, preventing it from spreading. Unfortunately, if left untreated this condition has a high mortality rate. Liver abscesses are treated with antibiotics.
