Caption: This axial (cross-sectional) CT image of the brain shows the changes related to anoxia (oxygen deprivation) in a person who nearly drowned to death. What you see are multiple areas of low density (which are darker), related to areas of ischemic injury or infarction due to the lack of oxygen. These are located in the basal ganglia and thalamic regions, which are particularly sensitive to oxygen deprivation.
