Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Model released. Young woman using a mouth inhaler for the treatment of an asthmatic attack. Asthma attacks vary in severity from breathlessness, dry cough, wheezing, a feeling of chest tightness, to chronic breathing difficulty. All symptoms are caused by narrowing of the bronchioles in the lungs and triggered by a variety of stimuli such as infection, pollen and dust. Once an attack has started, bronchodilator drugs such as Ventolin (salbutamol) used here, can be inhaled from small pressurised aerosol cans. The patient must exale first and then take in a slow and deep breath releasing the drug at the same time by depressing the canister. Relief is usually rapid.
