Caption: MODEL RELEASED. A nurse administering a bronchodilator drug by nebulizer to an asthmatic infant. Asthma is a condition where the bronchi become inflamed, seriously restricting breathing. An asthmatic attack may be triggered by a variety of causes including allergens, physical exertion and emotional stress. To relieve the symptoms, a bronchodilator is administered. In this case, a nebulizer is being used. This creates a fine mist of the drug, which is delivered in an oxygen or air supply through a face mask. If the condition persists into later life, the child will probably be taught to use less cumbersome inhalers.
