Caption: Asthma. Computer artwork of allergens (blue and green) amongst alveoli (tiny air sacs, beige) in a lung. Allergens, such as dust and pollen, can trigger an asthma attack. Asthma is a condition in which the small airways of the lungs (bronchioles, which end in alveoli) constrict making it difficult to breathe. This causes coughing, wheezing and breathlessness. Asthma usually develops during childhood and generally improves as the patient matures. Treatment is with bronchodilator drugs, which widen the airways.
