Caption: False-colour X-ray of a severely arthritic knee joint, showing the erosion of the cartilage lining the femur (top) & tibia (bottom). Erosion of the bone itself also occurs, & a fragment of bone appears to have broken off (at left of femur). Arthritis is the inflammation & degeneration of one or more joints. It may be caused by other diseases, including gout & tuberculosis. Osteoarthritis occurs in old age through too much use of a joint. Treatment involves using anti- inflammatory drugs (phenylbutazone) or steroids (cortisone); reduction of pressure on the joint (through losing weight or using a walking aid); & corrective or prosthetic surgery.
