Caption: False-colour X-ray of an arthritic knee joint. Osteoarthritis is a rheumatic condition that may affect both axial (spinal) and peripheral synovial joints. The disease is characterized by the gradual destruction of the joint cartilage with a resulting loss of space in the joint (apparent on image). Changes in surrounding bone include formation of cysts and osteophytes (bony spurs). The incidence of osteoarthritis rises with increasing age but is also combined with an inherited disposition. Abnormal, sustained mechanical wear (in a dancer's hip, for example) and damage to the cartilage by inflammatory joint disease are further contributing factors.
