Caption: X-ray image of the neck of a patient affected by rheumathoid arthritis. This is the most severe type of inflammatory joint disease in which the body's immune system acts against and damages joints and surrounding soft tissues. When cervical vertebrae are affected, as shown here, the cervical discs degenerate and the space between the vertebrae becomes narrower. This may cause severe pain, limitation of movements in the neck and shoulder muscles. (See P116/167 for an X-ray of a normal neck)
