Caption: Acute non-septic monoarthritis of knee. This is a close up of a patient's right knee showing an acutely red, swollen joint. There is a patch of inflammation visible over the knee cap which is localised to this area. This is a non-septic monoarthritis which only affects the knee joint of this patient. Common causes are osteoarthritis and gout. Treatment is with analgesia and of the disease in general. The skin over the thigh has thin, whitish patches with pale purple edges and buff coloured margins which extend to the front of the knee. This is the appearance of thinned skin which is a form of scleroderma. There is no treatment for this disfiguring condition.
