Caption: Rheumatoid arthritis. Coloured X-ray of the hands of a 58 year old woman with rheumatoid arthritis. Swelling and bone deformation is present on the finger joints between the metacarpal and phalange bones (centre, at the base of fingers). Rheumatoid arthritis is a type of arthritis where the joints of the fingers, wrists, toes or other joints in the body become swollen, stiff and painful, and in severe cases deformed. It is an autoimmune disorder (where the body's immune system attacks tissues). The onset of the disease is marked by fever and generalised aches and pains preceding joint symptoms. Treatment includes anti- inflammatory drugs and physiotherapy.
