Caption: Osteoarthritis of the thigh-bone. Gross specimen of the head of the femur bone, showing severe erosion in osteoarthritis. At centre is the ball of the femur which forms a joint with the hip bone. White cartilage is severely eroded to show the diseased bone beneath. Osteoarthritis is a disease of the joint cartilage that is associated with changes in the underlying bone. It causes a reduction in the joint space (due to loss of cartilage), and leads to the presence of osteo- phytes (bony projections). The joint becomes ragged, irregular, painful, stiff, with loss of mobility. Osteoarthritis affects the elderly.
