Caption: Osteoarthritis of knee. X-ray image of a face view of a knee showing symptoms of osteoarthritis. The lower end of the femur (thigh bone) is seen at upper centre. This joins to the upper end of the tibia (shin bone, lower centre). There is an osteophyte (bony growth) on the bottom left corner of the femur (centre left). Osteophytes are characteristic of osteoarthritis, and cause impaired movement and deformity. In a normal knee joint, a clear space should be seen between the femur and tibia. Osteoarthritis has led to the loss of the smooth joint surface, and of the separating cartilage. The only treatment is with painkillers, or surgery in extreme cases.
