Caption: Rheumatoid arthritis. View of a patient's feet showing valgus (outwardly displaced) heels caused by rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is a condition in which the body's immune system attacks its own joints, causing them to become stiff, swollen and deformed, as seen in the ankles here. In cases such as this, standing and walking may become painful and difficult. Treatment includes antirheumatic drugs such as gold, physiotherapy and, in extreme cases, joint replacement surgery. Rheumatoid arthritis affects around one in fifty people, usually appearing in middle age.
