Caption: Osteoarthritis of the feet. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of feet with arthritis. The joints within the feet (blue) have become swollen, making walking and movement painful and slow. Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis that damages cartilage and bone. Everyday wear and tear causes cartilage, the connective tissue found between joints, to be worn away. Cartilage cannot self- repair. Instead, new bone grows as part of the repair process. This new bone growth eventually causes swelling, stiffness and deformity. Osteoarthritis can be treated with anti- inflamatory drugs and, in severe cases, surgery.
