Caption: Arthrosis of the spine. Coloured X-ray of the lumbar spine of a patient with arthrosis. The vertebrae (blocks) at bottom have become compacted and parrot's beak osteophytes (abnormal bony spurs) have formed at their corners. Arthrosis is a degenerative joint disease that damages cartilage and bone. As the cartilage is worn away, new bone grows (osteophytosis) as part of the repair process. This causes stiffness and deformity of the joint. Treatment is with anti- inflammatory drugs and in severe cases surgery.
