Caption: Arthritic hip. Coloured frontal X-ray of the hip of a patient with osteoarthritis. The dark brown area (upper centre) is the socket of the hip joint where the pelvis (upper right) and the femur (the thigh bone, lower left) join. As the head of the femur swivels in its socket, the cartilage in the joint can wear away, resulting in inflammation of the joint (arthritis). The head of the femur ends up rubbing against the bone of its socket. This causes severe pain, and is treated by replacing the hip joint with a prosthetic implant.
