Caption: Arthritic knee. Coloured frontal X-ray of the knee joint of a patient with osteoarthritis. The spaces between the bones are smaller than is normal, due to wear and tear on the cartilage that normally lines the joints. The bones will rub together as the joint moves, causing stiffness and pain. This is a common disorder in the elderly. The knee is the joint between the femur (thigh bone, top) and the tibia (shin bone, bottom). The thinner lower leg bone, seen behind the tibia at right, is the fibula.
