Caption: Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of early synovitis (inflammation) in the synovial membrane lining a knee joint. The micrograph shows a cluster of synoviocytes attached to the membrane surface which in a healthy individual is smooth. Magnfication: X 1,000 at 35mm size. Synovitis is a disease of the joints whose symptoms include inflammation, swelling & pain. It is caused by injury to a joint, infection, or by joint disorders such as arthritis. The inflammation seen in this micrograph is of arthritic origin.
