Caption: Photograph of the sole of the foot of a person suffering from AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) showing skin lesions due to Kaposi's sarcoma, a hitherto unusual type of vascular cancer. Kaposi's sarcoma is common in homosexuals with AIDS, although it is rare in other risk groups - for reasons currently unknown (1987). The AIDS virus destroys T-helper lymphocytes, key cells in the orchestration of other cells of the immune system. Victims succumb to a number of opportunistic diseases related to defects in cell- mediated immunity.
