Caption: AIDS. Artwork of the outlines of a man and a woman and AIDS viruses. AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is a disease caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The viruses have a glycoprotein outer layer (white) which allows them to bind to white blood cells, and icosahedral protein coats (pink) which contain their genetic material. HIV is spread by infected bodily fluids coming into contact with the blood. This is usually by sexual intercourse, sharing hypodermic needles, or blood transfusions. AIDS destroys white blood cells, leading to a weakened immune system, and death by an opportunistic infection.
