Caption: AIDS child. Girl with AIDS undergoing a lumbar puncture. This procedure, also called a spinal tap, involves a needle being inserted into the spinal column to sample the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This can be analysed to diagnose a variety of diseases, including meningitis. Rapid diagnosis is essential in patients with AIDS, due to their compromised immune system. AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is a disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It weakens the immune system, making the patient susceptible to opportunistic infections and making normally harmless infections life threatening. Photographed in Thailand.
