Caption: Epidemic Kaposi's sarcoma. Coloured axial computed tomography (CT) scan of the lungs of a patient with tumours (light blue, centre left and right) indicating advanced stage epidemic Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). Epidemic KS is a cancer that commonly affects men with AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). It involves the development of tiny blood vessels (angiogensis) and is thought to be partly caused by a herpes virus, Human Herpes Virus-8 (HHV-8). Epidemic KS mainly appears as lesions on the skin, but it may spread (metastasise) to other internal organs. Treatment involves combinations of anti-cancer drugs, although prognosis is poor once the cancer has spread to the lungs.
