Caption: Bladder stones. View of several surgically removed bladder stones (also called calculi). Bladder stones are caused by a precipitation from solution of substances present in the urine. They mainly affect men and are usually a result of a urinary tract infection or urinary retention. In some parts of the world, such as South East Asia, bladder stones are more common and caused by a low-protein diet.
