Caption: Olecranon bursitis ("Student's Elbow"), swelling & inflammation of a bursa of the elbow. Bursitis is the inflammation of a bursa, a sac of fibrous tissue lined with synovial membrane & filled with fluid. Bursae exist where body parts move in contact, where they serve to reduce friction. The elbow & knee are the most commonly affected sites. They become inflamed through injury, infection or by rheumatoid synovitis. In the absence of any infection, bursitis is treated with rest & possible steroid injections.
