Caption: Bronchiectasis: false-colour bronchogram of the human lungs revealing bronchiectasis, a chronic inflammation of the bronchi and bronchioles - the airways of the lung - associated with their permanent dilatation. Repeated damage to the airways due to bacterial infection results in the destruction of their elastic & muscular components. The weakened walls become dilated and their secretions stagnate, provoking further episodes of infection. Here, there appears to be good filling of the left bronchial tree (right on image), but an almost complete lack of structure in the right bronchial tree (left on image).
