Caption: Boils. Close-up of the forearm of a patient, showing boils (furuncles) caused by Staphylococcus bacteria infection. A boil is a painful skin infection usually produced by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, which may enter through a hair follicle or a break in the skin. It starts as a red painful lump which progressively fills with pus. Boils are treated with antibiotics or, in severe cases, may be lanced by a doctor to allow the pus to drain.
