Caption: Boil on the knee. A boil (furuncle) near the knee- joint of a male patient. The boil is red and inflamed. A boil is an infected, inflamed, pus- filled area of skin. It is usually caused by infection of a hair follicle (the pit in which a hair grows) with the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. Boils heal when the pus is released by lancing or piercing. This patient was given antibiotics to prevent the spread of infection into the bones of the knee, which could cause osteomyelitis.
