Caption: Bowen's disease. Close-up of a dark, scaly lesion on the skin of a 94 year-old woman, caused by a rare skin disorder known as Bowen's disease. This condition typically produces red, scaly skin lesions on the face or hands. These lesions arise from the squamous cells of the epidermis - the uppermost layer of living cells in human skin. Treatment includes surgical removal, freezing, or burning the affected area. Once removed this disorder is unlikely to recur. In some cases, Bowen's disease can lead to cancer.
