Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Bursa on a 41-year-old woman's ankle. Bursae are fluid-filled sacs present between bones and the skin, muscles and tendons. They help maintain smooth movement between these structures. They may become enlarged at pressure points, for example to cushion a joint. This bursa may have developed as the ankle joint rubbed against footwear. The bursa may become inflamed (bursitis). If this causes pain, the bone can be surgically shaved, but padded footwear would relieve the pain equally well.
