Caption: Binswanger's dementia. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scans of axial sections through the brain of a patient with Binswanger's dementia, a progressive neurodegenerative disease. The scans show enlargement of the fluid-filled ventricles of the brain (green, centre) and lesions (green and black) in the cortex. The lesions are a result of atheroma, the build up of fatty deposits in blood vessels. The vessels become blocked and small areas of the brain are starved of oxygen resulting in the death of nerve cells. Symptoms include depression, muscle rigidity, difficulties walking and urinary incontinence. There is no cure for the condition.
