Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Bursitis of the knee of a 14 year old girl. The condition has led to swelling of the knee at right. Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa, a fluid-filled pad that lubricates regions where muscles and tendons slide over bone. A bursa can become inflamed either through prolonged pressure or repetitive movements. The knee is a very common site of bursitis, where it is often caused by kneeling for long periods of time, so-called housemaid's knee. Treatment of the condition involves immobilising the area and taking anti- inflammatory drugs.
