Caption: Breast cancer. Colour-mammogram (digitised) of a female breast showing scirrhous cancer. At centre, the tumour is coloured red with some growth toward the nipple. The term scirrhous describes carcinomas that are hard to the touch, normally containing dense fibrous tissue. Most breast cancers originate in the mammary ducts, as seen here, and the remainder in the lobular glands. Most tumours of either type show early evidence of invasive (malignant) behaviour, although not all breast tumours are cancerous. Mammography is an X- ray technique that is used to screen soft tissues of the breast as a means of detecting cancer.
